Belterra

This is a 3-4 hours tour that can be extended to include lunch.  Depending on road conditions, it takes about an hour to reach Belterra from Santarém. Henry Ford founded his second rubber tree plantation here in 1933. His first try was in 1928 at Fordlândia, which is much farther up the Tapajós River. These huge rubber tree plantations and their American-like villages were abandoned by Ford Motor Company in 1946. Over the next few decades the Brazilian government maintained some of the basic infrastructure of the plantation, for examples, the main village.  As would be expected, the rubber trees (more than 3 million) got very old and unproductive.  In recent years they have all been cut in favor of rice and soy plantations.
